The below poem was often recited as a pledge by members of the Secret Society of United Slavs to indicate their readiness for regicide. As with many Russian poets, much of the weight of Pushkin\'s work is lost in the translation - a fact which is also made difficult in this being one of his more controversial works that he himself would later in his life burn in the face of political pressures.

Dagger

The Lemnos god chained

you For the hands of the immortal nemesis,

Liberty the secret guard, the punishing dagger,

the last judgment of shame and resentment.

Where zeus a thunder is silent, where the sword of law slumbers,

the faitache you curses and hopes,

You are hiding under the shadow of the throne,

under the brilliance of festive clothes.

The frenzy of rebellions is raised by an evil cry:

The God of Lemnos is Hephaestus, the god of the blacksmith; Nemesis is the goddess of retribution (Greek mythology). Caesar - Julius Caesar; in 49, he crossed the Rubicon River, the border of Italy and conquered Rome Of Gaul, starting a civil war; after his victory, he was declared a dictator for life. The liberties of the headless / The executioner ugly Marat (1743-1793), the leader of the Jacobins - the revolutionary-democratic party of the French Revolution; he established a system of revolutionary terror. Pushkin, like many Decembrists, was negative about the Jacobin period of the French Revolution, considering it disastrous for the conquest of the revolution.
Eumenido (the goddess-vengeful) Pushkin named Charlotte Corde, who killed Marat. She was guillotined for it by the Jacobins (the victim of Hades). Under the victims of Aida, Pushkin understands, of course, not Charlotte Corde, and the victims of Jacobin terror.
A ceremonial grave. The tomb of the executed zanda has become a place of pilgrimage for radicalized youth.
No lettering a dagger. The German students-terrorists, contemporaries of zand, had a custom, which dates back to the medieval secret court in Germany, to attach to the dagger an inscription with the name of the doomed to execution. A dagger without an inscription is a weapon against any tyrant whose name is not necessary to designate.
